| On March 16, 1959 80 cars of different makes leave the German town Freudenstadt, the starting point of the "Caltex Economy Test", an international economy run. The goal is to use as little gas as possible without slowing down beneath an obligatory average speed. Every car is a normal series model. Besides the driver and co-driver there's also an official in every car that oversees if the driver keeps himself to the rules of driving normal - for instance if he doesn't turn of the engine while driving down a slope. The course measures 2000 kms. and goes through Germany, France,Luxembourg, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark. The course follows the winding roads of the Vosges and the Black Forest that are covered with snow, and also various big cities. After 5 days only about 30 participants arrive in Capenhagen without penalty points. On top is Chaterre's 2CV. On the distance of 2000 kms his average use of gas was no more then 3,75 litres for every 100 kms. That is indeed the lowest fuel consumption. This is an economy record. Ever since many 2CV's followed Chaterre's tracks and distinguished themselves in economy tests. |
