Three young people are forced to examine their personal and political ideals in this drama. In 1975, Victor (Andoni Gracia) is a young man in his early twenties; while he and his family are originally from Portugal, they emigrated to Paris when Victor's parents decided they could no longer tolerate the nation's Fascist rule. When Socialist factions overthrow Portugal's Fascist government, Victor is eager to celebrate the new freedoms in his homeland, convincing his close friend Marco (Adriano Giannini) to join him for a road trip to Lisbon. Tagging along for the ride is Claire (Gwenaelle Simon), Victor's former girlfriend, who is now married but still hangs out with him. As the three cover the miles to Lisbon in a beat-up Citroen 2CV, boredom leads to tension and anxiety among the three, which isn't eased when Victor discovers Marco once seduced Claire during the time they were still involved. Victor, Marco, and Claire eventually make it to Lisbon, where they meet up with Victor's Uncle Enrique (Francisco Rabal), but the visitors discover the fall of fascism hasn't brought the overnight changes they expected. Alla Rivoluzione Sulla Due Cavalli won the Golden Leopard award at the 2001 Locarno Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

For Your Eyes Only eschews
the gimmickry and campiness of earlier James Bond films, concentrating
instead on telling the story and maintaining suspense. Roger Moore is back
as Secret Agent 007, this time on the trail of Soviet spies while he romances
the beautiful Melina, played by Carole Bouquet. Richard Maibaum's screenplay
has very little to do with the collection of short stories that made up
Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only, save for the plotline involving Melina's
seeking vengeance for the death of her father. The direction is by John
Glen, who'd previously done second unit work on other Bond films. ~ Hal

In this adventure, a super-powered VW bug races through the beautiful Swiss Alps. Because the bug has a brain, it has an advantage that his faster rivals lack. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide As we see on the poster the super-bug exists of one half 2CV and one half of the VW Beetle. In my opinion the 2CV has the engine and front wheel drive, so the Beetle misses this..... |

Two young people with little in common are thrown together under unusual circumstances in this offbeat drama directed by Clara Law, who made a number of well-received films in Hong Kong before emigrating to Australia. Yoshiyashi (Rikiya Kurokawa) is an expert computer hacker and snake enthusiast who travels to Australia from his home in Tokyo to buy the car of his dreams -- a perfectly restored 1967 Citroen DS. However, when Yoshiyashi arrives at the home of the man selling the car, he makes a shocking discovery -- the owner has killed his wife and turned the gun on himself, leaving behind Deidre (Rose Byrne), the man's niece, who is both blind and emotionally unstable. As it turns out, the Citroen is still for sale, but now Yoshiyashi must make his deal with one of the man's relatives, who lives a five-day drive away. Yoshiyashi brings Deidre along for the ride, who in the course of the trip learns a lot about Yoshiyashi's studied cool, while he gets clearer perspective on the troubled past behind her impulsive eccentricity. The Goddess of 1967 was shown in competition at the 2000 Venice and Toronto film festivals. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

Martine and Lawrence help the ghost writer escape, but she is accused of murdering a notorious gangster. The thug conveniently appears and is promptly arrested, as the writers all try to get back to work. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide |

Piccoli, Ottavia Piccolo, Jacques Dutronc ...more
Michel Piccoli plays Simon, a French businessman reluctantly venturing into middle age. As he deals with his own midlife crisis, Simon becomes virtually oblivious to the social changes around him. The businessman tries to counter advancing age with an increased sex life, but finds that women aren't the same compliant creatures he remembers from his youth. Though the material is rife with opportunities for "radical" camerawork, director Claude Sautet chooses an austere, near-classic cinematic style, allowing us to concentrate more on the people in front of the camera rather than the person behind it. Featured in the cast of Mado is actress Romy Schneider, a Sautet favorite. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Rochefort, Coluche, Roland Dubillard ...more
The feature debut of prominent French director Patrice Leconte is a spoof of the detective genre, done in absurdist, deadpan style. Gaspard Gazul (Roland Dubillard), a harmless bus ticket puncher, has been blown up in his own water closet with the door locked from the inside. A po-faced police inspector (Jean Rochefort) and his bumbling assistant (Coluche) investigate the case. The denouement is remarkably nonsensical, as is most of the film's plot. Most characters are comic variations of archetypes from classical French whodunits. ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide |

In this uneven take-off on some reluctant resistance fighters in World War II, a family of musicians find themselves the unwilling hosts of a segment of the German High Command when their Paris mansion is taken over by the occupying forces. What happens next is a series of individual skits, cameo appearances, and zany interludes that are not necessarily as strung together as they are strung out. Characters include: Adolph Hitler's melodious half-brother whose singing style is hilariously close to that of Julio Iglesias, a "good" German officer, stereotypical of any of those found in post-World War II movies, and a woman who provides the comedy in a 1970s television talk show when she expounds on what really happened in the Paris villa back when. It is the acting which carries the day for this film, more than the actual script or cinematic development. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide |
